Another trapping article Cin??? Well Kinda… How do I build a trap? This is a question I get asked often. What is the perfect set up for a trap? If I want to trap what should I use when it comes to troops, traps, boosts, etc. There are a lot of components that go into trapping and because of that, we have a lot of articles that talk about what you need to be successful as a trap and how different components of the game are going to factor in and what you need to consider.
However, there are factors that we have not discussed that make a successful trap. Factors that rely more on you and your knowledge of the game than whether or not your stats are equal to x amount. Yes, you still need the stats but you also need other factors that in part are largely based on attitude and the ability to understand a game that does not always make sense. So today, I want to spend some time talking to all of you about what it really takes to be a successful trap and what that looks like.
Six Things You Really Need In Order to Be a Successful Trap
There is more to trapping than meets the eye. You can build the perfect stats and still not be a successful trap. So what does it really take to be a successful trap? Let’s get started!
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number One: Be Flexible
The day has come! You have built the perfect trap and you are ready to go out and conquer the world. Or at least kill it in SvS. However, a few days before SvS rolls around the blogs announce a new feature. You throw up your hands in frustration and decide that you do not have what it takes because this new feature just ruined your plans. You stay shielded during SvS.
This scenario happens. New things are going to continue to enter the game and you will have to adjust and roll with it. If you are always waiting for your account to be perfect you will be wearing a lot of shields and let’s be honest after about two seconds that gets really boring. Learning to adjust your stats on the fly and how to be flexible and consider the newest release as a new challenge instead of an obstacle in your path is what will keep the game interesting and fun.
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number Two: Have a Deeper Knowledge of the Game
I know I said that we were not going to talk about features and troops and all that and we really are not. However, this tip is truly fundamental to you being successful as a trap. Understanding how the game works and how it has worked throughout its history is important. It helps you to adjust and to be able to do so with confidence.
For example, if you do not understand how stats work you may add Troop Health without realizing that you may be fully debuffed when it comes to that aspect and you should instead have added Type Health or Base Defender Health. You may add more troops thinking that more troops will help you defend better when really they will not, you need more health and defense and troops equate to attack.
When you look at the game, yes, there have been changes, understanding those changes and understanding how the game works now will help you to be successful as a trap.
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number Three: Surround Yourself With Other Traps
One of my favorite things to do is to nerd out over stats and how they work. I love doing this with other traps because it gives us the opportunity to really do a deep dive and discuss how this will impact our accounts and different ways we can adjust. Some of the best trappers I have known take components of their builds from other traps. Surrounding yourself with other traps helps you to have a deeper knowledge of the game. Sharing reports and stats helps you see various scenarios and how they play out. Which ultimately will help you to be successful as a trap.
Whether this means you make friends with other traps or join rooms that have other traps build that community around yourself and do not be afraid to ask questions. The only stupid question is the one that was never asked, I guarantee that if you have to ask it that someone else will have the same question.
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number Four: Understand What your Account Can and Cannot Do
I tend to run a smaller trap that is built for smaller attackers. I know this about my account and I do my best to understand what kind of hits I can withstand and what kind of hits I cannot. I know for sure that if Gypsy is running towards me then I am running in the opposite direction. Understanding the types of hits your account can take is important so that you can then know who to let hit you and who to not
This is not a perfect science though and if you do not build for the biggest players then it is possible that someone will sneak in and smack you so hard you end up with whiplash. That’s okay, it happens, do not let your pride let you feel ashamed (yes, I am giving this advice to myself as well).
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number Five: Be a Snowflake
If one more person asks me how many troops they need or what level their Mech needs to be to trap successfully… well I might scream. I mean do not go out there and unshield and be ridiculous with level one mechs. However, trapping is and should be considered an art. Each player’s account should be unique.
A truly successful trap is going to understand that if their account looks exactly like Sally’s account or Jack’s account (yes I just used names from a Nightmare Before Christmas) then that will impact their ability to trap. It’s like the houses you see that all look alike, they are cookie-cutter houses, there is nothing unique about them. Be a snowflake and make your trap unique instead of trying to follow a checklist of items. Having a deeper knowledge of the game is one of the things that will help you have the ability to be a snowflake and therefore be a successful trap.
MSHQ Successful Trapping Tip Number Six: Be Resilient
For those of you who do not know Resilient means, I googled it for you:
re·sil·ient
/rəˈzilyənt/
adjective
-
(of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions.
“babies are generally far more resilient than new parents realize”
Similar: strong, tough, hardy, quick to recover, quick to bounce back, buoyant, difficult to keep down, irrepressible, adaptable, flexible
Opposite: vulnerable, sensitive -
(of a substance or object) able to recoil or spring back into shape after bending, stretching, or being compressed.
Notice that under similar we once again see the word flexible. Being a successful trap does not mean that you will never be zeroed. It does not mean you will never have to shield. It does not mean you will never take hits that just suck. Being a successful trap ultimately means that you have the ability to take those hits and spring back and come back better than ever.
We may desire to look vulnerable as traps but that does not mean we are.
Bonus MSHQ Tip to Successfully Trap: Have a Competitive Spirit
Be willing to accept a challenge and face it head-on, work to be the best. I cannot say this better than the person who taught me to trap said it. So I am going to wrap these tips up with a quote from him:
Keep going, work harder. Not just in the game, but in life. When you actually believe in something, and you work for it, and you know you honestly have done your best; people will tell you it’s not possible. That’s when you need to double down. In-game, it applies and it did happen to me. In real life, I’m going through something like that currently. But I know I work for things like few people will, so I will always double down and accept the challenge.
