People play MMO games for many different reasons: strategy, friendships, boredom, experience and fun to name a few. Most players fall under three main categories: Fighter, Social and Builder. Just like the people we know in life, each gamer is different. No matter what type of player you are or the reason you play, there is one thing we all need to succeed, an Alliance!
An Alliance is necessary to grow, learn and battle. Like mini societies within themselves, you will find an entire network of jobs and functions in successful alliances everywhere.
The first and most important thing about an alliance is to find one suited to your playing style. For example, if you enjoy chanting and joking with fellow members constantly, a disciplined fighting alliance may not be the best fit for you.
In reverse, if you are a fighter and expect all to focus during, and participate in battles such as rallies, a building alliance may not be the best home for you. Keep in mind the most successful alliances have a mixture of styles; find a comfortable mix of socializing, growth and fighting that will make YOU feel right at home.
There are some key aspects to look for in an alliance that indicates success, no matter what style the alliance is.
When shopping for your family, ask yourself the following:
- Is Leadership active?
- Do you feel comfortable talking to leadership about questions, concerns or issues?
- Does the Alliance represent the same gaming ideals that you do? (For example are you ok with tile hitting, or alliances with an open door policy?)
- Do you feel like you are a part of the team?
- Are you satisfied with the Alliance growth rate? This can include new members joining as well as how the old members themselves grow individually.
- Do members show respect and or support towards each other? (Keep in mind one’s idea of support or respect is not the same as someone else’s)
- Is Help, whether advice or gifts, available when requested?
- Is Chat active at least some portions of each day?
Once you have found an alliance you are comfortable with, you will notice certain types of players begin to emerge within your new micro-society. These types of players are sought after for the parts they play to make the alliance successful as a whole.
Let’s take a look at some Player roles:
This person is a leader in every aspect. People follow without effort and they command respect without even trying. Directing comes as naturally to them as breathing. The Leader is not always who you may expect. In some alliances, it’s the biggest spender, in some, it is the most intelligent player. No matter who the person is, they speak (or type) and others listen. The best leaders never forcefully assert their power. They allow the group to naturally follow. They have the final say in all matters. Leader types tend to stay calm and cool under stressful situations and guide others as needed.
Often referred to as the brains of the group, The Professor is crucial for figuring stats and numbers to be an efficient force, whether it be discovering the most profitable way to farm or knowing how to set up an account with precision to inflict the most devastation possible. The Professor delightfully pours over numbers and relishes in finding the smallest improvements that they know will add to the overall success of the group.
Every group needs a conversationalist. Socialites keep alliance chat going and keep communication in the alliance active. This can help other members to feel included and part of the team, adding to feelings of loyalty and comradery towards the group. The social aspect of these games is what keeps many people playing, even when they become discouraged for whatever reason. Socialites help facilitate friendships and keep members longer.
The Politician is crucial in an Alliance. They not only help with Alliance matters but deal with State matters with grace and ease. Politicians are gifted with a silver tongue, able to dispel disagreements between members and smooth over mistakes by members or issues within the State to avoid war.
Alternatively, they help to create war when one may be needed. Politicians are often the face of the alliance and are responsible in large part for how others perceive the group. They are aware of State events and occurrences and can apply everything around them to future needs. They always have a plan and they are always working it for the family.
The Secretary (or Administrative Assistant)
The record keeper of the group, the Secretary is always on top of Alliance messages and keeping things within the alliance organized. They are often the keepers of event scores, the holder of secret recipes, the writer of Alliance Mail, or the organizer of Blogs. The Secretary is often the first to announce new information to the group from the grapevine or the blog. If you want information, they know where to find it. They work endlessly to make sure members can get that information they may need when they need it.
Test! Test! Test! The Scientist and Professor often work closely together. Many times they are the same person. While the Professor works with the numbers on paper, the Scientist puts those numbers into action. Running test after test to achieve the results they are looking for, Scientists use book knowledge often discovered by The Professor to apply in a more practical aspect in the game.
Every Alliance has the Mom or Dad always looking out for others, or the “Caregiver”, if you will. This person keeps tabs on other members ensuring they are shielded or they have what items they need. They stick up for the ones that often lose all their troops and know what personal issues members may be having. They are rarely the biggest but will often give the last of what they have for the success of the family.
This person is often the “runt of the liter” but is a part of the family nonetheless. They are funny, amiable and are like the little brother that everyone includes because mom and dad make you. You love them despite the fact they don’t contribute much with their accounts per se, but they are always there to make you smile. The Mascot always lightens the mood. Although they aren’t the smartest or well built, you can’t help but want to help them. Even though The Mascot isn’t the typical member you look for, they are family.
The Cheerleader is the morale booster of the group. No matter how bad a situation may seem, they are the eternal optimist, always looking to the bright side of any situation. Every success no matter how small gets encouragement and support to the family is constant. They may or may not be able to support with their account, but they are always there to cheer you on.
In a fighting Alliance, a Berserker is a double edge sword. They attack everything and anything and live by “YOLO” or “Hold my Beer” creeds. In non-event times they can be a blast to play with and are excellent to inspire others to fight or to push their limits. During events where point loss matters, they may need to be encouraged to hold back a bit to prevent giving up too much. Although they have a 50/50 success rate, their enthusiasm and eagerness is contagious and generally is much more helpful than harmful when encouraging the right way.
The War General
Every Fighting Alliance needs at least one War General. This person either works with or doubles as the Professor, Scientist, or Leader. They call the battle shots. One person directing at a time avoids confusion. They can make adjustments at the drop of a hat for any target they come across. They direct all battles with precision and lead their alliance to victory through fighting.
The MOST important part of an Alliance is the group as a whole. Without the family no bits of help are pushed, no rallies filled, no conversations are to be had. Each family is unique and each family is imperative to the game. Just like in real life, no two families are the same. Find the one that fits you best!
Always remember that an active, truthful and communicating alliance inspires loyalty and longevity. Look for an alliance with rules that are clear and concise. Consequences for breaking any rules should be known well in advance to avoid temper tantrums and drama.
Regular activity checks are also good to maintain efficiency and reduce the “so and so didn’t do anything” chit chat. Try to find Alliances that utilize social media and other tools to further communicate with your family for added social, learning and emergency notifications while tightening the bonds between each member.
